The Body Of The Martin D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar

The body size of the Martin D-28 dreadnought guitar is known as a D-14 Fret. Its total length is 40 1/2". Its body length is 20" with a width of 15 5/8" and depth of 4 7/8". The ornamentation and styling of this guitar is minimal. The binding of D-28 is of White Boltaron.

The soundboard top of the D-28 is made of solid Sitka Spruce top with a polished gloss finish. The top of the D-28 has a multiple Black/White Boltaron inlay. The top braces of the D-28 is made of 5/16'' solid Sitka Spruce and is produced in the standard ''X'' Bracing pattern.

The D-28 has a Rosette of Black/White Boltaron inlay made from old style 28 wood fiber. The pick guard of the D-28 is coloured black.

The D-28 has a standard belly style bridge made from solid black Ebony. It has a 16'' radius, compensated, bone saddle. The bridge string spacing of the D-28 is 2-1/8''. The bridge endpins are white with black dots.

The back of the D-28 is made from polished, solid East Indian Rosewood and has Sitka "Golden Era" back braces. The back of the D-28 has a black and white Boltaron inlay with old style 28 purfling.

The side of the D-28 is made from polished, solid East Indian Rosewood. There is no inlay on the sides of these guitars.

The end piece of the Martin D-28 guitar is made of white Boltaron with an inlay of black and white Boltaron. The electronics is optional with these guitars.

The Sitka Spruce tops and East Indian Rosewood back and sides are designed to resonate. That combined with the top and back bracing, give these guitars a very well balanced bass, volume and tonal qualities.

The Neck Of The Martin D-28 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar

The heel of these magnificent Martin dreadnought guitars is made from Mahogany blocks with a dovetail neck joint. The heel cap of the D-28 is made from white Boltaron.

The neck of the D-28 is made from selected Hardwood. The D-28 has a low profile neck shape with a satin polished finish. The neck is designed to allow a medium to high action, which feels great all over the neck.

The nut of the D-28 is made of bone. The headstock of the D-28 is of a solid diamond design with a square taper. The head plate of the D-28 is made of solid East Indian Rosewood with raised gold foil.

The fingerboard of the Martin D-28 guitar has the old style 28 inlays and is made of solid black Ebony with a scale length of 25.4''. There are 20 frets on the fingerboard including 14 clear frets. The fingerboard width at the nut is 1-11/16'' and at the 12th fret it's 2-1/8''.

The tuning machines of the Martin D-28 guitar is of Chrome enclosed design with large buttons. They are excellent turners that have silky smooth tuning capabilities and keep the guitar in tune.

The recommended strings for the Martin D-28 guitar is the Martin SP Lifespan Phosphor Bronze Medium Gauge (MSP7200) strings. Other guitar players also use Elixir light to medium gauge strings or D'addario EXP11 Bronze Acoustic Strings with great results. The D-28 requires medium type strings to get the best results.

The Martin D-28 dreadnought guitars come with a Martin deluxe 640 molded hard shell case.

Is this a good violin?

I played violin for six years (from 3rd to 9th grades) but never really learned to play well. I'm in 11th grade now. I've got this violin:

Wm. Lewis and son model WL80E4 from 2002
It was priced at 760 new.

What specific things should I look for to see if its good. I mean it sounds good but I don't really know what I'm looking for.

Also, when I used polish on the fingerboard, this black stuff came off, so I'm questioning whether or not the boards actually ebony. Or if I just killed the violin or whatever.

It's really difficult to say without hearing the violin itself, as these are very subjective matters. It seems like you've got a factory-produced model, and it should be fine for a beginning student. It depends on your playing ability, if you're talented enough to play concertos or such, a violin like that is going to make it very difficult for you.

Really, difficult to say. =/ Sorry! Ah, and polish generally should only be used on the body of the violin, and perhaps the scroll (top). If the fingerboard became discolored, it won't really affect the sound, only the looks.
