How to Determine the Price and Value of Pianos
If you are in the early stages of buying a piano, chances are you are starting this journey with very little knowledge about piano prices. Let's face it; the average person does not make this type of a purchase on a regular basis, and may not have a clear understanding of the fair market price for a piano.
The process is further complicated by a set of variables to consider such as who will be the primary pianist(s), how long do you intend to keep it, and of course what is the true reason for wanting a piano in the first place. Is it going to be a noisemaker for young children or grandchildren? Will it sit and gather dust in a corner as a piece of forgotten furniture and not be properly maintained and tuned? Or is there a current or future musician in the picture ready to spend countless hours perfecting Bach or perhaps composing new music?
Once you have done the necessary soul searching to determine what the most practical piano purchase will be for your circumstances, start researching piano prices to determine what type of purchase will best fit your needs.
Begin your research by pricing new pianos from local or national retailers either through media advertisements or online. An Internet search will also provide various books, forums and other resources with compiled lists of piano values. The perfect piano may be available locally from a private seller, but just as you may hire a mechanic to check out a used car you are considering, consider having a professional piano tuner check out your potential purchase.
If you have visions of restoring a vintage piano for less than the price of a new piano, proceed carefully! You may find that restoring an old piano to the point where it is a fine musical instrument costs far more than purchasing a new piano.
A final thought on piano prices. It matters not if the purchase is for a local church, a cozy corner by the fireplace or a concert hall; time spent doing research for the right piano at the right price will be time well spent.

What are stage & vintage pianos?
Are you referring to the names a synthesizer might call various electric piano sounds? Usually a "stage" piano refers to the Fender Rhodes Stage 73 or 88 models; these instruments produced sound by hammers striking metal tone bars. A "vintage" piano might be any classic electric piano such as a Rhodes, Wurlitzer, or even an RMI electric piano (Rhodes is the most common; think of Chic's "Good Times" or Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are". Examples of the Wurlitzer include Supertramp and Ray Charles' "What'd I Say";the RMI was used on the "Jetsons" theme and Dr. John's "Right Place, Wrong Time"); my Yamaha Motif MO6 has a "vintage" sound that is reminiscent of the early Rhodes (prior to the "Stage" models).
