Proper lighting is essential when playing or practicing the piano. I think this has to do with the practicality of the finely-controlled mechanism of the hammer action more than anything. The placement of the hammers on the strings is usually where the energy transferred from the hammer will produce sufficiently loud sound on the string, and where on the string there is a small enough amount of vibration so that the hammers don't fling back if they hit the string while it's vibrating.
The dampers are are above the hammers because it is practical in terms of design and the nature of a standing wave on a vibrating string. If the hammer hits a string and the damper, located not on top of the hammer, comes down very shortly after on the string, there will be a minute delay in the damping of the string due to the added distance. Thus, in addition to being practical with short, thin wooden bars, the dampers are above the strings so they can immediately stop the string where the vibration originated.
